Preserving traditions in the Jewish community in Prague

On March 28, my family attended “kabalat Shabbat” in the Prague synagogue under the leadership of Rabbi David Mach. In a warm and family atmosphere, Jews prayed, made kiddush, congratulated children on their birthdays, and shared news.

Particularly interesting was the speech of a Jew, a professional soldier in the American army. He spoke about the need for Jews to serve in the army, talked about what Jews know from their own experience about the hostile attitude towards Jews in the world, about examples that undermine the faith of Jews in the need to serve in the army: such as the 100 thousand Jews who served in the German army during the First World War and then the catastrophe in Germany with Hitler coming, about service in the Soviet army where Jewish identity was prohibited, about the name of the “Israel Defense Forces” with an emphasis on the word “defense”.

It is impossible not to agree that the need to serve in the army is inextricably linked with the identity of Jews and the preservation of the Jewish future of the land of Israel.

In our opinion, it is necessary that the encouragement of military service be incomparably higher than all the “benefits of saving” time when refusing military service.
